New Year, New Branding

Your brand is so important! As a small business, your brand is what is going to be remembered. Mark Twain said it best when he said “There is no such thing as a new idea.” The market is oversaturated so how does a small business stand out??? It’s you and your brand! The only thing original in this world is you so make sure your small business reflects that.

In celebration of my brand re-launch, I will go over some key aspects of a brand that can have a great impact on your small business.

  1. Cohesive characteristics

To start, you’ll want to come up with 3-5 words that describe your small business. These are words that should describe your business’s views, image, and distinct qualities. For example, the J Ricketts Bookkeeping brand stands for simplicity, orderly, detail-oriented, and flexible. These words are qualities that I want my business to be known for.

So get started! Get out a sheet of paper and start jotting down words that you want your business to stand out for - there are no wrong answers!

  2. Cohesive color palette

The colors of your brand should loosely coincide with the characteristics of your brand. More importantly, using your colors consistently throughout your marking strategy will create a cohesive look for your business.

To create a cohesive color palette, choose 5-6 colors that contain a variety of light and dark shades. You will want a variety of light and dark shades so that you will have a color for every occasion: website background (light), website font (dark), etc. To get inspiration on what looks good together, I used Pinterest just so I wouldn’t pick a bunch of colors that didn’t aesthetically vibe together. The options are endless!

Consistently using these colors seemlessly throughout your business is the most important part! Use this palette for your logo, website, social media, etc. Everything should be done within this color palette in order to achieve a cohesive business brand.

  3. Cohesive images

Photography is a big part of any business. What is a business without some kind of marketing and what is marketing without some sort of image??? You’ll want to think about the style of photography that will go with your brand. Go back to the 5 characteristics that decribe your brand! In my experience, clean, light, and simple photos was the look I was going for in my branding session. I feel like it coincides with the message that I want to provide orderly, simple, and easy to understand results for my clients. After you decide on the style of photography, you’ll want to think of certain ways that you can deliver your branding message through the photo. Yes, having a good branding photographer is important and will do alot of the work for you, but think of ways that you can make you brand stand out even more in the photos. This includes incorporating your color pallete into your outfits and backdrop, picking appropriate poses for your photography style, and what action you want to capture in a photo. Ultimately, you want to not only portray the message of your brand, but you also want to give potential clients a look into who you are and what you do (especially if you work remote).

The biggest key to unlocking a successful brand is cohesiveness. Everything needs to flow together and work toward a bigger picture. So take your time. Get lots of paper and just start writing your business’s characteristics down. No one is watching and no one is telling you how your business should be but you. This is important and long term so you don’t want to rush it.
